There are several reasons why we might find ourselves oversharing:

Overheard Oversharing at the Hairdressers




I recently had an encounter that perfectly illustrated the concept of oversharing. While sitting next to a young girl at the hairdresser, I observed her engaging in a conversation with the hairdresser. Within a few minutes, she had shared every detail of her love life, her partner, her parents' relationship, and even her brother's personal issues. It was a torrent of information, and the hairdresser listened politely but seemed overwhelmed.




This young girl was clearly experiencing a lot of emotions. She seemed confused about her life, unable to control situations, and felt embarrassed and hopeless. This is a prime example of oversharing – an unfiltered outpouring of personal information driven by intense emotions and a lack of boundaries.




The Emotional Impact of Oversharing




Oversharing often stems from a place of emotional turmoil. When we feel overwhelmed, confused, or out of control, we may seek solace in sharing our experiences with others. However, this can lead to unintended consequences:




1. Vulnerability: Sharing too much personal information can leave us feeling exposed and vulnerable. We may worry about how others perceive us and fear judgment or rejection.




2. Embarrassment: In the moment, it might feel cathartic to share our innermost thoughts and feelings. However, afterward, we may feel embarrassed or regretful about revealing so much.




3. Strained Relationships: Oversharing can strain relationships, especially if the other person feels overwhelmed or uncomfortable with the level of detail being shared.




4. Emotional Dumping: When we overshare, we may inadvertently place an emotional burden on the listener. They might feel obligated to provide support or advice, which can be draining for them.

It's important to remember that emotions surface to be released, not dumped all over some unsuspecting person. When we feel intense emotions, our natural inclination might be to share them with others. However, this can lead to oversharing and the negative consequences that come with it.

1. Blowing a Kiss Remedy: Engage in breathwork exercises to release tension and calm your mind. Take deep, slow breaths, and feel the tension, emotions leaving your body with each exhale.




2. Physical Activity: Physical activity is a great way to release pent-up emotions. Whether it's a brisk walk, yoga, or dancing, moving your body can help you process and release emotions. Screaming out the car window, screaming down at the beach…when others aren’t around ;)




3. Creative Expression: Channel your emotions into creative activities such as writing, painting, or playing music. Creative expression can be a powerful outlet for processing and releasing feelings.




4. Talk to a Trusted Friend: If you feel the need to share your emotions, choose a trusted friend or family member who understands your boundaries and can provide support without feeling overwhelmed.


5. Professional Help: Don’t burden others and begin a relationship of them getting frustrated because you don’t take their advice! Or you feel ashamed, embraced from oversharing. 3. Ask for Permission: Before diving into a detailed account of your experiences, ask the other person if they have the time and emotional capacity to listen. This shows respect for their boundaries and ensures they are prepared for the conversation.




4. Be Mindful of Timing: Consider the timing of your sharing. If the other person is going through a difficult time or is busy with their own concerns, it might not be the best moment to share your emotional burdens.
